This is more of a nomadic trek involving many high altitude
passes and monasteries in pristine Himalayan environment.
A trail connecting green Kullu valley with high altitude
cold desert of Leh Ladakh is a worthwhile experience to
cherish throughout your life.
Itinerary:
Day 1
Delhi (315m) - Chandigarh (365m) - Manali (2050m); (4 hours
by train and then 8 hours by Jeep)
Leave Delhi for Chandigarh by Shatbadi Express at 07.40
in the morning. Chandigarh is famous for rock garden. Leave
for Manali by car/jeep. Mandi is a beautiful town situated
on the banks of river Beas. Mandi is blessed with 80 beautiful
temples and temples of Panchvaktra and Trilokinath are famous
for their architecture. There are many places to explore near
Mandi - Parashar lake, Kamru Nag lake, Barot valley and Jehjheli
valley are some the unexplored places near Mandi. Arrival
in Manali. Escort to hotel for rest in Manali. Hang around
the mall in the evening. Overnight stay in hotel.
Day 2
Manali (2050m)
After breakfast we will take you to the famous Hadimba temple
- a famous woodwork in Pagoda style architecture. Then we
will visit Nagar castle and Roerich Art Gallery - dedicated
to the famous Russian painter Nicholas Roerich who married
the Indian cine idol Devika Rani and lived there. Then we
will visit Snow point. After that, we will visit Vashist that
is
famous for its hot water springs. After all explorations we
return to the hotel for overnight stay.
Day 3
Manali - Darcha (3360m); 7 hrs
7 hours drive over Rohtang pass (3978m) which is the gateway
to Lahaul and Spiti, Pangi and Zanskar valley.
Day 4
Darcha - Palamo (3825m); 4-5 hrs
Darcha will be our starting point and after 3 hours trek through two villages of Rareek and Chikka. We will reach Palmo passing by a spectacular gorge. We continue along the left bank, and then cross at the first ford. Overnight stay in camp.
Day 5
Palamo - Zanskar Sumdo (4100m); 5 hrs
A gradual climb, we reach a second ford. 400m of gradual
climb from Palamo to Zanskar Sumdo. We camp beside a ford.
Day 6
Zanskar Sumdo - Chhumik Nakpo (4670m); 6 hrs.
Cross the second ford then go up the right hand valley
following the stream which comes from Shingo La. Streams in
Himalayas should be crossed carefully even if they look small
and our experienced guide will assist you at every point of
the trek. Overnight camping in small meadows.
Day 6
Chhumik Nakpo - Shigo La (5090m); 7 - 8 hrs
An eventful day for those who have never climbed to this
altitude. From the camp, we climb moderately to the base of
the pass. Finally at the top of the pass of Shingo La (5090m)
to see the view of various peaks. We walk over the glacier
and fallen rocks. Finally we reach Lakhong camp beside small
stream.
Day 7
Lakhong - Kargyak (4230m); 5 - 6 hrs
Cross the stream and come to the right side of stream.
Walk on a mass of fallen rocks, then cross a small stream.
After one hour, we pass beneath the face of the Gomborangjum
and descend to Kargyak - the first village of the Zanskar
region.
Day 8
Kargyak - Purne (3965m); 6 hrs
Walking through a Buddhist area means to go always from the
left side of Chorten (Stupa) and recite 'OM MANE PADME HUM'
(Sanskrit hymn). We continue on the right bank. Reach Tanze
which is a small village. A short distance beyond Tanze, there
is a small bridge across, to the left bank. Slight rise leading
to Kuru, we have a major village of livestock breeders. Then
we arrive in Testa, a beautiful village. The path continues
downward as we near the river. We stay on the left bank, and
then climb to Yal. Upon reaching Yal we take a steep descent
towards a large bridge and cross to go Purne.
Day 9
Purne -Phutkal (4055m); Purne; 6 hrs
Go up the right bank of the Tsarap River into the splendid
gorges. We cross a bridge. A ledge leads to a small plateau
sprinkled with Chorten and religious banners. From there,
we see the most spectacular sights in the Zanskar regions.
Phuktal Monastery is built under a huge cave. Phuktal belongs
to the tradition of Gelukpas (Yellow section). We visit Phuktal
and return by the same route to Purne.
Day 10
Purne - Vipula (3865m); 5 - 6 hrs
From Purne we come back to the bridge, cross the bridge and
then go up the left bank. We walk through small canyons of
pudding stones. Pass a bit above a hanging bridge, which leads
to the village of Cha. 2 hours later reach Kheydang a small
village in a popular grove. We pass below the village of Surle.
Finally we reach the camp site of Vipula near a teashop.
Day 11
Vipula - Raru (3960m); 6 hrs
We travel a long way to the large bridge which leads to Ichar
village. We have a gradual climb before coming to a major
tributary (bridge), then to the camp site of Raru. Overnight
camping near the lake.
Day 12
Raru Padum (3530 m); 5 - 6 hrs
From the camp we cross a beautiful plain covered with flowers.
We see the monastery of Mune. We go down a steep incline to
the main trail. After two hours, we arrive at Burden Gompa,
a Kargyudpa Monastery famous for its prayer wheel. Several
beautiful villages on the right bank of Tsarap River. A dusty
trail takes us to the sub-headquarters of the Zanskar regions,
Padum.
Day 13
Padum Karsha (3320 m); 4 - 5 hrs
We trek towards Pipiting, a dusty plain, towards the Doda
river. A new bridge over the Doda river, we cross it and walk
up towards Karsha Monastery. Visit the monastery, which belongs
to the Gelukpas section, and have a good view of the valley.
Karsha is the biggest monastery in Zanskar region, having
150 monks of the yellow section. We camp at Karsha.
Day 14
Karsha Pishu (3660m); 5 hrs
Walk along the left bank of Zanskar River. Above Rinam, is
a small stream and shelter is formed by the rocks. See the
Thongde monastery on the right side of Zanskar river. The
trail further takes you to the Pishu village. A very attractive
camp site below the village of Pishu.
Day 15
Pishu Hanumil (3650m); 5 - 6 hrs
We continue on the left bank of the river. We cross a bridge
before Pidmo, then another 2 hours later we hike to the camp
site at Hanumil.
Day 16
Hanumil - Perfi La (4650m) - Snertse (3940m); 6 hrs
We still continue on the left bank of the Zanskar River. We
cross a small stream on the left, the trail leads away from
the edge of the Zanskar and up to the foot of the pass. Steep
and difficult climb to Perfi La (4560m), after a steep descent
to Uma Chhu river, we cross a bridge and climb to 500m. We
continue on sandy slope, then one and half hour to the camp
at Snertse.
Day 17
Snerste - Hanumil (4800m) - Lingshed (4100m); 7 - 8 hrs
We have a very long gradual climb to the pass of Hanumil (4800m)
through the gorges. It takes us two and half hours to reach
the pass from the camp. A 1000m long descent, then another
250m climb to a small pass. We then walk down to the camp
site at Lingshed.
Day 18
Rest day at Lingshed to visit Lingshed Gompa.
Day 19
Lingshed Gazo or foot of Sengge La (13090 ft/3990 m); 6 hrs
We take a 1-hour easy climb to Netoski La (4475m.). We look
out at the view of Nerag on the other bank of Zanskar River.
We gradually descend to the villages of Gongma and Skiumpata.
We cross a small stream and climb to the pass of Kuba La (4520m.).
We slowly climb to the camp site of Gazo or foot of Sengge
La.
Day 20
Foot of Sengge La - Sengge La (5060m) - Photoksar (4400m);
6 - 7 hrs
From our camp, we take a 2-hour steep climb to Sengge La pass
(5060m). We take a short climb to Bhumiktse La (4520m) descent
towards Photoksar, a beautiful village at the base of huge
mountain wall, and cross the bridge and camp near the stream.
Day 21
Photoksar - Sir Sir La (4965m) - Hanupatta (4070m) 5 - 6 hrs
Long ascent of the Sir Sir La (4965m) then an easy descent
to the river, cross the river by bridge and we walk along
the left bank. We camp before Hanupatta village.
Day 22
Hanupatta - Wanla (3470m); 5 - 6 hrs
We continue along the left bank until we enter the gorges.
We cross a small bridge until we reach the Yapola. Another
3 hours to Phenjila, a small village. We walk along the right
bank until we reach the village of Wanla. We cross the bridge
towards the camp.
Day 23
Wanla - Prinkiti La (3930m) - Lamayuru (3750m) 4 - 5 hrs
We walk up to Shillakong along the right bank and cross the
bridge, come to left bank until we reach a Chorten (Stupa)
then follow a dry and narrow gorge going up to Prinkiti La
(93930m). We walk down and cross a small river and towards
the village of Lamayuru. Lamayuru has a famous ancient monastery.
This monastery is the oldest in Ladakh region and has a big
library of Buddhist literature. The trek terminates here and
from here Leh is 120km. We reach from Lamayuru to Leh by luxury
bus/taxi and then to Darcha. The pickup from Lamayuru to Leh
is included. Overnight stay at hotel.
Day 24
Lamayuru (3750m) - Leh (3505m)
Drive to Leh from Lamayuru and check in at a hotel .Visit
Leh Palace, Leh gompa, Shanti Stupa and local bazaar. Dinner
and overnight stay at hotel
Day 25
Leh - Stok Palace - Shey - Thiksey - Hemish - Leh
After breakfast we take you sight seeing to the Stok Palace,
Shey Palace, Thiksey and Hemish monasteries. After today's
expedition we return to Leh for dinner and overnight stay.
Stok Palace (14km south east of Leh) is where the present-day
royal family resides. Stok Palace and museum were built in
the year 1825, by King Tespal Tondup Namgyal. At present,
the palace has a collection of royal dresses and crown which
is open for travellers to see. Shey Palace (15km south of
Leh), was built by Deldan Namgyal at the beginning of the17th
century AD. In the monastery is a three story statue of Buddha
Shakamuni in copper gilt which was made by Deldan Namgyal
in the memory of his father - Singay Namgyal. The statue is
the only one of its kind in the region. Thiksey Gompa (17km
south of Leh) is the most beautiful of all monasteries in
Ladakh, belongs to the Gelukspa order. Hemish Gompa (45km
south of Leh) is one of the most famous and largest monasteries
of Ladakh. It belongs to the Dupka order of Tibetan Buddhism.
The monastery was founded by the first incarnation of Stagsang
Raspa Nawang of Stagsang Raspa Nawang gyasto in 1630, who
was invited by King Singay Namgyal and offered a religious
estate throughout the region.
Day 26
Leh - Khardung La (5602m); (world's highest altitude motorable
pass) - Leh (39km)
After breakfast we take you to Khadong Pass (18390ft) which
is 39km off Leh. Later, we cross the pass and go back to Leh.
Evening is free to visit Leh market. Dinner and overnight
stay at a hotel.
Day 27
