Leh to Manali - mountain bike
trip ride through the roof of the world
If you are looking for excitement of pure downhill, day
after day, through ever-changing scenery, the Leh to Manali
traverse is hard to beat. This 500km journey will be a matchless
experience. Biking through the world's highest altitude
road maintained by defence services, we will not only cross
high ridges and passes but also observe and assimilate the
culture of the Himalayas. In the series of high passes we
will cross Tanglang la at 5280m, second highest road pass
in the world. One must be aware of the altitude and its
effects, and hence we provide special attention to comfort
and safety. Thus we keep few days for acclimatisation giving
us chance to explore surrounding areas of Leh including
places of religious and cultural interest. The shortest
period in which it is possible to successfully complete
the trip is approximately 3 weeks which will depend upon
number of side trips. The capped peaks with a clear blue
sky as a backdrop offer a wonderful, pure environment for
the 'kyang'(wild horse), wolf and mountain hare.
Day 1
Fly to Leh ( 3505m )
Fly to Leh from the domestic terminal. The hour long flight
with spectacular scenes features views of the 7000m Nun-Kun
mountain. After landing at the air strip of Leh ( 3500m
) we drive you to your hotel. In the evening we can assemble
our bikes; the option to visit Leh market is also available.
Day 2
In Leh ( 3505m ) for acclimatisation
As acclimatisation is an important factor towards successful
completion of the whole journey, we have designed tours
specifically keeping this in mind. On the downhill ride,
the first day we visit Stok palace which has superb views
looking back across Leh. Our support vehicle takes you back
to Leh. For those who have acclimatised sufficiently already,
there is a 13km climb back to Leh.
Day 3
We also offer white-water rafting. Drifting past Ladakhi
villages, we negotiate gentle low grade rapids till the
meeting point of Indus River and Zanskar. After a small
party at this picnic spot we drive back to Leh. The evening
is still there to practice more riding. You can definitely
look forward to adventure as you traverse on the world's
highest road.
Day 4
Leh - Khardung-la - Leh ( 5380m ); ( 80km )
We ride till Khardung la ( 5380 m ) - the highest motorable
pass in the world. The challenge of cycling all the way
to the top is irresistible. The three hours of cycling will
not be as difficult as you might expect despite the altitude.
A photograph while at the top is worth keeping throughout
your life. The views are rewarding as they invoke a sense
of contemplation. We then ride back downhill and take rest
in the evening as the next day we resume our cycling.
Day 5
Leh - Chilling village
The next day of acclimatisation includes drive to village
of Chilling (starting point of Markha valley trek). We will
cycle through wild and rocky terrain, which can very well
rank as the best road adventure in mountain biking in Himalayas.
The height and sheer ascents and descents of the road, rocks
changing colours with day light will inspire you and make
you feel like coming back to this place again and again.
Day 6
Leh - Hemish Monastery - Tak Tak Monastery - Upashi village
- Karu ( 85km )
This day involves a steep climb to Hemish and Tak Tak monasteries,
taking the same old route along Indus valley till the turning
point of Hemish monastery. From Hemish we will cross the
valley towards Tak Tak monastery.
Day 7
Karu - Rumtse ( 33km )
We cover some distance on our support vehicle by which we
have travelled during our acclimatisation. From the village
of Upashi ( 3450m ), we ride through amazing Ladakh scenery,
road guarded by rock walls. Covering a total distance of
30km we make our first campsite at Rumste ( 4370m ).
Day 8
Rumtse - Tanglang la ( 5360m ) - Pang ( 89km )
We cover the first pass on our route, the Taglang la ( 5360m
) which is the second highest motorable pass in the world.
It comes after 30km of steady uphill biking. After a small
celebration at the top, we will ride slowly downhill towards
moray plains which is geographically part of the Tibetan
plateau but lies within India. The natural lights splashed
across the high plateau create a magical atmosphere. After
leaving this plateau we reach Pang ( 4400m ) our next camp
site at the bank of a river.
Day 9
Pang - Lachlung la ( 5019m ) - Sarchu ( 72km )
We set out for the 5065m Lachlunga La and 4900m Nakli La
through this road which is a remarkable piece of engineering.
You can enjoy beauty of this heavenly place from the comfort
of your bike saddle. After Lachlunga La, a fast descent
to Nakli La (4900m) towards Brandy Nulha (Whiskey Bridge).
Remember, the road distance can be shortened by following
natural trails. Our campsite will be at Sarchu at border
of Himachal Pradesh - another unforgettable experience !
Day 10
Pang - Lachlung La ( 5019m ) - Sarchu ( 72km )
A 2-3 hours climb to Barchla pass ( 4380m ) with a close
view of Chandrabhaaga range. This pass is a point to Zanskar,
Lahaul and Rupsu areas of the inner Himalayas. We will drive
till Jispa our next campsite situated on the banks of Bhaaga
River in Lahaul valley. From high deserts into green forested
valley is definitely a welcome change.
Day 11
Jispa - Base of Rohtang Pass ( 3050m ); ( 76km )
We continue our 25km ride to Keylong, the major town of
Himachal. Our camp site will be at base of Rohtang pass
-surroundings get greener and beauty of alpine scenery is
unmatched.
Day 12
Base - Rohtang Pass - Manali ( 2050m ); (64km)
After travelling so far we feel more confident when we look
back and climb to Rohtang Pass (3990m ) with motivation
and zeal. Then after crossing Rohtang Pass, we continue
our descent to the town of Manali following the green forested
slopes of Kullu and Manali valleys. A mind-blowing 52km
long ride and 2000m descent in altitude! In the comforts
of our hotel, we will celebrate the completion of this "
Roof of The World Bike trip" !
Day 13
A guided tour of Manali town and its near-by attractions
can be taken with ample time in hand to explore the local
market and culture.
Note:
From here, there are various options back to Delhi and can
be discussed with the travel consultant.
The above day-to-day schedule should be taken as a general
guide. Even though we update our itinerary every year to
take into account such things as changes to trekking routes
and changes in the routing or availability of local transport,
it is not possible to guarantee that any of our holiday
package will run exactly according to proposed itinerary,
as a variety of factors including adverse weather conditions
and difficulties with transportation can lead to enforced
